Scholarships

Scholarships are funded by Sci 5

The ISSS will be awarding multiple SCI 5 Scholarships worth more than $15,000 in 2022 to students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, innovation, and extracurricular involvement. This year the ISSS will also be introducing scholarships for underrepresented science students including specific scholarships for women and Indigenous students.  Students must have paid SCI 5 to be eligible.

Description of Awards 

Outstanding Achievement in Science Scholarship

  • Up to four (4) scholarships valued at $750.00 each. 
  • Candidates must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 and must have taken a minimum of twenty-four (*24) credits toward their current undergraduate degree by the end of Winter term 2022.
  • Candidates must be enrolled full-time  (according to the University of Alberta definition) in the current academic year. 
  • Special consideration will be given to well-rounded students with strong academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and recommendation letters. 

Science Involvement Scholarship

  • Up to seven (7) scholarships valued at $750.00 each.
  • Candidates must be verified as having contributed their time to supporting the greater science community. 
  • Candidates must demonstrate a combination of volunteerism and leadership. 
  • Preference will be given to students who are involved with a recognized COSSA group. 
  • Candidates must be in satisfactory academic standing (according to the University of Alberta definitions). 

The Future of Science Scholarship

  • Up to four (4) scholarships valued at $1000.00 each. 
  • Candidates must create a creative and original essay to one of the provided prompts.
  • Candidates should demonstrate interest in research and discovery within Science.
  • Candidates must be in satisfactory academic standing (according to the University of Alberta definitions).

Women in Science Scholarship

  • Up to three (3) scholarships valued at $1000.00 each.
  • Candidates must identify as female.
  • Candidates must create a creative and original essay to one of the provided prompts.
  • Candidates should be able to illustrate current inequities and potential avenues of growth for women in science, based on their own personal experiences. 
  • Candidates must be in satisfactory academic standing (according to the University of Alberta definitions).

Indigenous Students in Science Scholarship

  • Up to three (3) scholarships valued at $1000.00 each.
  • Candidates must identify as a member of the Indigenous community in Canada.
  • Candidates must create a creative and original essay to one of the provided prompts.
  • Candidates should be able to elaborate on how their identity as an Indigenous individual has influenced their experience in the scientific community. 
  • Candidates must be in satisfactory academic standing (according to the University of Alberta definitions).

How to Apply

Deadline for application is Friday March 11, 2022 @ 11:59 p.m. No late applications will be accepted.

Completed applications must be mailed to [email protected] with First and Last name followed by Winter 2022, SCI 5 Scholarship in the subject line, as a single pdf file.
